French Drain Installation in Trinity, AL

French Drains · Trinity, AL

Water carried away from soggy yards, pads and drives

French drain installation gives water a way out of a yard that stays soggy. We dig a trench with a slight slope and lay perforated pipe in gravel along the bottom. Water sinks through the gravel, gets into the pipe and runs downhill by gravity. Precision Excavation is based in Trinity and puts in French drains across North Alabama.

We also cut and clean out drainage ditches and put in driveway culverts. When the ground itself tips water toward the house, that is a job for grading. Estimates are free: call or text (256) 303-7210.

When yard drainage calls for a French drain

A soggy yard is one sign you may need a French drain. Standing or pooling water in the yard or on the driveway is another. So is rain that keeps running toward a house, shop or pad. The drain catches that water and carries it off.

The trackhoe digs the trench on a steady fall. Where the drain needs an outlet, it lets the water out at daylight, away from the house. Daylight means open ground lower than the drain.

USDA soil records trace the red clay found here to limestone. Clay holds a lot of water in its fine pores. Low spots that collect runoff stay wet, and those are the spots a French drain is built for.

Drainage ditches and driveway culverts

A drainage ditch catches water running across the ground and carries it downhill. We cut ditches along drives, property lines and fields with the trackhoe and the dozer. On a driveway, the ditch runs end to end so water stays off the drive.

Old ditch lines fill with silt, brush and cattails until they hold water. We dig them back out and give the bottom a steady fall again. Inside Huntsville city limits, stopped-up and overgrown ditches can be reported through the city's Huntsville Connect app. If the ditch is the city's, report it there first.

A driveway culvert carries ditch water under the entrance. We lay the pipe in the ditch line and cover it with rock. In Morgan County, driveway permits come from the County Highway Department or the County Engineer's office. Check with the county before a new entrance or culvert goes in.

Drainage solutions for pads, shops and new builds

Under the International Residential Code, lots shall be graded to drain surface water away from foundation walls. The grade has to fall at least 6 inches within the first 10 feet. Check with your city or county on which rules apply to your build.

Sometimes the shape of the ground is the whole problem. If the yard tips toward the house, regrading sets it to fall away. Where lot lines, walls or slopes leave no room for that fall, the code calls for drains or swales. They carry the water away from the building.

A French drain also fits ground where water soaks in and stays. On a new build, the drainage and the dirt work can come from one company. We build house pads with the water graded away and set French drains where the lot needs them. The ditches and culvert for a new gravel driveway can be part of the same job.

How We Work

How a Job With Precision Excavation Runs

From the first call or text to the last load hauled off, here is how it goes.

1

Call or text

Tell us what you have and where the property is. Photos of the ground help. Call or text (256) 303-7210 and we set a time to come look.

2

We look at the ground

We come out and see the job in person. Trees, slope, wet spots and rock all change the work. The estimate comes after that, and it is free.

3

We plan the approach

We decide which machines the job needs and in what order they work. Access, where the dirt goes and where the debris goes get settled first. Alabama 811 gets called before any digging starts.

4

Machines and trucks come in

Our lowboy brings the machines to the property and the work starts. The dump trucks bring material in and carry spoil, rock and debris out. We work in an order that keeps water running off the ground.

5

Cleanup and final grade

The debris leaves the property and the dirt gets rough graded back out. Water is shaped to run away from the pad, the drive or the house. Then we look the job over with you.

FAQ

French Drains Questions, Answered

Common questions about french drains across North Alabama. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (256) 303-7210

How deep should a French drain be, and how much slope does it need?
National cost guides such as HomeGuide put most French drains at 12 to 24 inches deep. HomeGuide calls for a slope of at least 1 percent, a foot of drop for every 100 feet of drain. We set the depth and fall to fit your ground and the outlet.
Do I need a permit for a French drain?
It depends on where the land sits, so check with your city or county first. Inside Huntsville city limits, grading permits from the city's Engineering Division cover drainage-related work unless exempt. A free Alabama 811 request goes in two to ten full working days before digging. Digging starts only after every utility has responded.
Do you work inside basements or crawl spaces?
No. Our drainage work stays outside: French drains in the yard, drainage ditches, driveway culverts and grading. Work inside or under the house calls for a different trade.
What happens to the dirt from the trench?
It gets spread on site or hauled off. One national cost guide suggests reusing trench soil elsewhere in the yard to cut disposal fees. Dirt that has to leave goes out in our own dump trucks, by the load. The same trucks can bring in the gravel for the drain.
How long does it take to put in a French drain?
It depends on how long the drain runs and what the ground is like. HomeGuide, a national cost guide, puts a French drain at 4 hours to 3 or more days to install. Rock in the trench line or a long run to the outlet adds time.
What drives the price of a French drain?
Length and depth come first, since they set how much trench gets dug. Rock in the trench line may need the ripper, the same tool we use for rock removal. Machine access and how far the pipe runs to the outlet matter too. Our French drain cost guide covers the market numbers, and our estimate is free.

Why Choose Precision Excavation

Built for Dirt Work in North Alabama

Trackhoes, a dozer and dump trucks

The excavators, the crawler dozer, the skid steer mulcher and two dump trucks belong to the company. A lowboy trailer hauls them to your property. One call puts all of it on the job.

Clearing through haul off

The same company clears the lot, cuts the pad, shapes the drive and hauls the debris away. You line up one contractor for the dirt side of the work.

Built for rocky ground

North Alabama sits on limestone and chert, often close to the surface. Our trackhoes carry rippers, so rock that stops a tractor or a post hole digger comes out. It gets moved, buried or hauled off.

Free estimates across North Alabama

We are based in Trinity and work about 60 miles out, all inside Alabama. That takes in the Decatur and Huntsville area, the Shoals, Cullman and the farm country between. Estimates are free, so call or text.
