Excavation and Dirt Work for Russellville Property Owners

Russellville, the Franklin County seat, sits in the northwest corner of Alabama on the Highland Rim. Land around town can be rocky or wet, and sometimes both. A wooded lot may need clearing, a rock cut and a gravel drive before a house goes up. On an old farm, there may be a falling-down barn to take down or a silted pond to clean out.

Precision Excavation is an excavation contractor based in Trinity, just west of Decatur, and we travel to Russellville from there. Here, our excavation and dirt work means digging, grading and moving dirt with trackhoes, a dozer and dump trucks. We also handle land clearing, pads, ponds, driveways, rock, demolition and hauling. Rock and Old Mine Ground Around Russellville

Russellville grew where Jackson's Military Road crossed the Gaines Trace, and the town was incorporated in 1819. Today Jackson Highway, US 43, follows parts of that old road and leads north to Muscle Shoals. Franklin County was one of Alabama's first iron-ore mining centers, with early mining along Cedar Creek near Russellville. In the Reconstruction era, the town was a center of the iron and steel industry.

That past can still be in the ground. The USDA soil survey for Franklin County maps more than 4,000 acres as mine pits and dumps. If you know a tract was mined or filled, tell us at the estimate.

The same survey maps more than 90,000 acres of the county as sandstone or limestone rock land. If rock turns up in a pad or drive cut, a trackhoe (an excavator) with a ripper breaks it loose. Boulders are moved aside or hauled off as part of our rock removal work. Solid ledge that a ripper will not break needs other methods, and we say so at the estimate.

Farm Ponds Near Cedar Creek and Bear Creek

Cedar Creek flows through the north-central part of Franklin County, and Bear Creek crosses its southwest corner. Both are Tennessee River tributaries. TVA built a reservoir on Bear Creek in the late 1960s, creating Bear Creek Lake. In 1978, TVA dammed Cedar Creek, creating Cedar Creek Lake.

Back from the water, farm ponds suit this farm and livestock country. Our pond construction work digs new ponds, builds and shapes the bank and cleans out ponds that have silted in. The spoil is spread on the property or hauled off by the load.

Under section 26a of the TVA Act, a dam or other obstruction affecting navigation, flood control or public lands along or in the Tennessee River or its tributaries needs TVA's approval first. So check with TVA before any fill, digging or shoreline work near the water or across a creek. Our pond permit guide has more on the rules.

House Pads, Driveways and Wet Ground Around Russellville

The ground changes from one side of Russellville to the other. From Moulton, AL-24 runs west on a rural, mostly flat and straight route to outside town. West of Russellville the road turns winding and rolling, and the four-lane there took several ridge cuts to build. On either side of town, our grading shapes yards, building sites and pastures to a plan.

On flat ground, a house pad is built up in compacted lifts, with fill brought in by the load. On a slope, we cut into the high side and use that dirt to build up the low side. Either way, the finished pad is graded so water sheds away from it. That matters here, where NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put Russellville at about 57 inches of rain a year.

December and March are the wettest months on average, and October is the driest. A soil called Savannah covers more than 34,000 acres of the county. From January to March, it can hold water 1.5 to 3 feet below the surface. A drive on ground like that needs a firm base, a crown and ditches, which our gravel driveway work builds.

Land Clearing, Demolition and Storm Debris in Franklin County

Farming, livestock, timber and quarrying stone are among Franklin County's industries, and poultry processing is one of the largest. A pasture or fence line on farm ground can grow up in brush when it sits. Our dozer work pushes the brush out and reclaims the pasture. To open a wooded lot, land clearing takes out trees, brush, stumps and roots with the dozer and trackhoe.

The debris is hauled off, buried on site or burned, depending on the tract and your plans. If you choose to burn, that part is yours as the landowner. A fire of a quarter acre or more needs an Alabama Forestry Commission burn permit. Where the ground should stay covered, forestry mulching grinds brush and small trees in place with a skid steer.

On April 27, 2011, tornadoes killed 26 people in the Franklin County communities of East Franklin and Phil Campbell. Storms still bring trees down across the county. The dozer and trackhoe clear them, and our stump removal pulls each stump, root ball and all. Old houses, barns, sheds and mobile homes come down with our demolition work. Our dump truck hauling takes debris off and brings fill dirt, topsoil, gravel and crusher run in by the load.

Communities and areas we serve around Russellville: Phil Campbell, Hodges, Vina, Liberty Hill, Belgreen, Spruce Pine, Frankfort, Halltown, Pleasant Site, Atwood, Cedar Creek Lake, Bear Creek Lake.

Russellville ZIP codes served: 35653, 35654.

Russellville FAQ

Questions From Russellville Property Owners

A few of the questions we hear most around Russellville. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (256) 303-7210

Do you work in Russellville?
Yes, we come to Russellville from our base in Trinity, out AL-24 past Moulton. Our own trucks and lowboy trailer bring the machines. Franklin County, which borders Moulton's Lawrence County on the east, sits inside the roughly 60-mile area we cover. That includes the 35653 and 35654 ZIP codes and places like Phil Campbell, Hodges, Vina, Belgreen and Spruce Pine.
What drives the cost of excavation work in Russellville?
We price each job after we see the ground, and estimates are free. Around Russellville, rock and old mined or filled ground can change the work. So can wet ground, access off a county road and what happens to the debris. The distance from Trinity counts too, so call or text (256) 303-7210 to set up the estimate.
Can you work on a lot near Cedar Creek Lake or Bear Creek Lake?
Yes, and on a lake lot our part is the dirt work: clearing, the pad, the drive and the hauling. Both lakes sit on Tennessee River tributaries, so check with TVA before any fill, digging or shoreline work there. Then call or text (256) 303-7210 for a free estimate.
Do I need a permit to clear or grade land in Franklin County?
Check with Franklin County, or with the City of Russellville if the land is inside the city, before work starts. ADEM, the state environment agency, requires stormwater permit coverage for a site that disturbs one acre or more. Our land clearing permit guide covers more.
What should I do before you dig?
Know where your property lines are and mark them if you can. An Alabama 811 request goes in two to ten full working days before digging, and the service is free. Digging can begin only after all utilities have responded.
