Jasper sits in hill country. Walker County lies in the Cumberland Plateau region, with many plateaus and valleys and many forested areas. A home site here might be a wooded ridge top or a hillside that falls away toward a creek. Before anything gets built, the trees have to come out and the ground has to be cut level.
Precision Excavation is based in Trinity, just west of Decatur, and we travel to Jasper from there. Jasper, the Walker County seat, sits near the south edge of the area we cover. Around Jasper, we do excavation and dirt work, plus clearing, dozer work, grading, pads, rock, ponds, driveways, demolition and hauling. Call or text (256) 303-7210 for a free estimate.

On a hillside lot near Jasper, the pad starts with a cut into the high side. That dirt builds up the low side in packed lifts, with fill brought in by the load when needed. Jasper averages about 62 inches of rain a year, so the finished house pad has to shed water.
Rock can turn up in a pad cut or a drive cut in these hills. A trackhoe with a ripper breaks it out, and we stack it on the property or haul it off. That is our rock removal work. Solid ledge that a ripper will not break needs other methods, and we say so at the estimate.
January is the wettest month in Jasper on average, and October is the driest, per NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. A drive up one of these hills needs a firm base, a crown and ditches to handle that rain. Our gravel driveway work cuts the base, shapes the crown and tops it with gravel or crusher run.
Much of Walker County is forest, and a wooded lot near Jasper has to be cleared before anything else happens. Our land clearing uses the dozer and the trackhoe to take out trees, brush, stumps and roots. The ground is left rough graded and ready for the next step.
Around Jasper, the debris is hauled off, buried on site or burned, depending on the tract and what you want. If you choose to burn, that part is yours as the landowner. Here, as across Alabama, a fire of a quarter acre or more needs an Alabama Forestry Commission burn permit. Even with a permit, the person burning stays responsible for damage the fire or smoke causes.
On a Walker County tract, forestry mulching is the other way to clear brush and small trees. A skid steer with a mulching head grinds them in place and leaves a mulch layer. On open ground around Jasper, the trackhoe pulls stumps out root ball and all. That is our stump removal work.
Jasper is coal country. Settled around 1815, the town grew fast once the Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad arrived in 1886. It went from 200 people in 1886 to more than 3,000 in 1890. The 2020 census counted 14,572 people in Jasper and 65,342 in Walker County.
Into the 1890s, coal mining, coke ovens and saw mills were the main industries here. Local officials have described coal mining as "literally at the core" of the county's economy. The county is home to the Alabama Mining Museum, and the Alabama Surface Mining Commission is based in Jasper. If you know a tract was mined or filled in the past, tell us at the estimate.
When an old house, barn, shed or mobile home near Jasper is past saving, our demolition work takes it down. The trackhoe tears it apart, and our own dump trucks haul the debris off.
Lewis Smith Lake covers 21,000 acres north of Jasper. The 163-acre Walker County Public Lake offers boating and fishing. On private land, we dig new farm ponds, shape the banks and clean out ponds that have silted in. That is our pond construction work, and the spoil is spread or hauled off.
Storms have hit Jasper hard before. In April 1974, a tornado heavily damaged downtown Jasper. On April 27, 2011, the National Weather Service rated a Walker County tornado it named Parrish-Cordova an EF-3. Another tornado that day, rated EF-4, crossed Walker and four other counties.
After a Walker County storm, the dozer pushes downed trees into piles and the trackhoe pulls the stumps. Our dump truck hauling takes the debris off, or it gets buried on site or burned. The same trucks bring fill dirt, topsoil, gravel and crusher run to sites around Jasper by the load.
