Rain follows the shape of the ground, and grading is how that shape gets set. As a grading contractor, Precision Excavation cuts high spots down and fills low ones to fit a plan. The finished ground falls away from the house, and rain runs off the yard. We are based in Trinity and take on grading jobs across North Alabama.
We grade yards that hold water and lots getting ready for a new house or shop. We also level fields and grade the base under a gravel drive. When the lot is still in trees, we start with land clearing. Estimates are free: call or text (256) 303-7210.

USDA soil records describe the red clay here as formed from limestone. Clay holds a lot of water in its fine pores. Where the ground dips, rain collects and soaks the clay under it. Land grading gives that water a slope to follow.
The International Residential Code says lots shall be graded to drain surface water away from foundation walls. A yard that tips toward the house does the reverse and sends rain at the foundation.
Rock is the other thing to plan for here. In spots, limestone and chert sit close to the surface, right where a cut has to go. The ripper on the trackhoe breaks it loose and pulls it out of the way. When there is a lot of it, the job becomes rock removal.
Yard grading fixes ground that sends water the wrong way. The signs are puddles that stay for days and a soggy spot by the back door. Ruts from trucks count too, and so do sunken spots where dirt settled.
We cut the high side down and bring the low spots up, then smooth it all out. The fall gets set so water runs away from the house and keeps moving. Yards get the skid steer and land plane, and bigger ground gets the dozer. When a yard needs more dirt, our dump truck hauling brings fill in by the load.
Pasture and field leveling works the same way on a bigger scale. The dozer cuts down humps and fills washed out spots so a tractor can run across it. A field grown up in brush needs dozer work to push it out first.
Site grading for a new house or shop happens in two passes. Rough grading comes first, before anything goes up. The dozer and trackhoe cut and fill the lot to the plan. We build house pads for homes and barns as part of that first pass.
Finish grading comes after the builder is done. Our skid steer and land plane trim the dirt around the building and set the fall away from the walls. A new drive or small parking area gets its base graded before the gravel or limestone goes down. Ruts in an old gravel driveway are a regrading job we take on too.
Before the machines come, have your property lines marked and the plan or grade stakes ready. Permits vary by place, and Morgan County requires flood plain permits for most construction. When grading cuts into the ground, a free Alabama 811 request goes in two to ten full working days ahead. Digging starts only after every utility has responded.
From the first call or text to the last load hauled off, here is how it goes.
Tell us what you have and where the property is. Photos of the ground help. Call or text (256) 303-7210 and we set a time to come look.
We come out and see the job in person. Trees, slope, wet spots and rock all change the work. The estimate comes after that, and it is free.
We decide which machines the job needs and in what order they work. Access, where the dirt goes and where the debris goes get settled first. Alabama 811 gets called before any digging starts.
Our lowboy brings the machines to the property and the work starts. The dump trucks bring material in and carry spoil, rock and debris out. We work in an order that keeps water running off the ground.
The debris leaves the property and the dirt gets rough graded back out. Water is shaped to run away from the pad, the drive or the house. Then we look the job over with you.

North Alabama sits on limestone and chert, often close to the surface. Our trackhoes carry rippers, so rock that stops a tractor or a post hole digger comes out. It gets moved, buried or hauled off.
